Crypto.com Arena (known for 22 years as Staples Center) is the home of the LA Kings (NHL), LA Lakers (NBA), and LA Sparks (WNBA), located at 1111 South Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles. Opened on October 17, 1999 at a cost of $375 million in private funding (no public money), the arena was developed by AEG and Majestic Realty on a site negotiated with LA city officials. It was renamed Crypto.com Arena in December 2021 when cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com purchased naming rights for a reported $700 million over 20 years -- the largest naming rights deal in history at the time, though controversial among LA sports fans for whom "Staples Center" was deeply embedded in cultural identity. No arena in North American professional sport has hosted more championship titles. Crypto.com Arena has witnessed six NBA championships (Lakers: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2020), two Stanley Cup championships (Kings: 2012, 2014), and three WNBA titles (Sparks: 2001, 2002, 2016) -- eleven total across three sports. The arena has also hosted 23 Grammy Awards ceremonies (more than any other venue in Grammy history), the 2000 Democratic National Convention, the public memorial for Michael Jackson (2009), and the Kobe Bryant memorial (2020). The naming rights revenue funded a four-phase nine-figure renovation completed by fall 2025 -- the most comprehensive transformation in the building's history. Key additions: a new 5,500 sq ft Daktronics centre-hung scoreboard installed in August 2024 (27 feet tall, 170.5 ft circumference, 41.7 million pixels); the City View Terrace indoor-outdoor skyline bar with 30-foot glass doors overlooking downtown LA; updated premium clubs and concourses; and renovated team facilities for all three franchises. Three Michelin Star chef Ludo Lefebvre now has three in-arena concepts; Doritos After Dark operates its first-ever brick-and-mortar restaurant at Section 109. Star Plaza on the arena's north side features 14 statues of LA sports legends -- Wayne Gretzky (the first, unveiled 2002), Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Oscar De La Hoya, and Kobe Bryant (two statues, with a third planned). Gate 3 was renamed the Kobe Bryant Gate in 2024 when the Kobe and Gianna Bryant Memorial Statue was unveiled on the northwest side. Metro Pico Station (A and E Lines) is a 5-minute flat walk from the arena -- the recommended arrival method from anywhere in the LA basin. L.A. LIVE, the 5.5-acre entertainment campus surrounding the arena, includes the Grammy Museum, Peacock Theater, Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill, and Xbox Plaza. The arena is confirmed as the gymnastics venue for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.
