Easter Road, known to Hibernian supporters as The Holy Ground or The Leith San Siro, is one of Scottish football's most celebrated and historic venues. Located in the vibrant Leith district of Edinburgh, the stadium has been home to Hibernian Football Club since 4 February 1893, when Hibs hosted Clyde in the first match at the present site. The current all-seated capacity of 20,421 is spread across four modern stands: the Famous Five Stand (main stand, west), the South Stand (away), the East Stand, and the North Stand, all rebuilt during a comprehensive redevelopment programme between 1995 and 2010 that transformed Easter Road into one of Scotland's finest stadiums at a cost exceeding £8 million in initial phases. The ground holds the record attendance for any football match in Edinburgh — 65,860 for the New Year derby against Hearts on 2 January 1950. The stadium features a hybrid grass surface and undersoil heating to cope with Edinburgh winters. Beyond football, Easter Road hosts Edinburgh Festival Fringe events, conferences, weddings, and community events. In 2025, the Hibernian FC Visitor Centre opened at the stadium, providing self-guided heritage experiences for visitors on non-match days. Easter Road was also announced in November 2025 as a proposed venue for the 2035 Women's World Cup if Scotland's joint bid succeeds.
Easter Road's history is intertwined with the remarkable story of Hibernian Football Club, founded in 1875 by Irish immigrants in Edinburgh's Cowgate district. Hibs first moved to the present Easter Road site in 1893, though at that time the ground was a temporary arrangement. The club secured a 25-year lease in 1922, and by 1924 the ground had been substantially rebuilt with a western main stand and terracing for around 45,000. The stadium's record attendance of 65,860 was set in 1950 during an Edinburgh derby — still the highest attendance ever recorded for a football match in Edinburgh. The Taylor Report prompted a complete transformation between 1995 and 2010, with all four stands rebuilt to create the modern all-seater ground. The Famous Five Stand is named in honour of the legendary forward line of Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull, and Ormond that powered Hibs to three league titles in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In September 2025, Hibs qualified for European football, continuing the club's notable continental tradition.
Easter Road generates an excellent atmosphere on match days, particularly for Edinburgh derby fixtures against Hearts and for European ties. The modern enclosed stands channel crowd noise effectively onto the pitch, and the Hibs support — passionate and vocally committed — can create a formidable home environment. The Famous Five Stand houses the most committed vocal supporters. Hibs fans are known for their emotional renditions of Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers, an Edinburgh anthem that has become synonymous with the club and creates spine-tingling moments at significant fixtures.
