Fir Park is the home of Motherwell Football Club and one of Scottish football's most characterful grounds, located on the south-east fringe of the town of Motherwell in North Lanarkshire. The stadium has been Motherwell's home since 1895 and has a current all-seated capacity of 13,677. Four stands surround the pitch in an unbalanced configuration: the Phil O'Donnell Stand (main stand, west side), the Davie Cooper Stand (south, 1995), the Tommy McLean Stand (east), and the John Hunter Stand (north). The stands are named in honour of some of the club's greatest servants. Phil O'Donnell, a gifted midfielder, tragically died at Fir Park during a match in December 2007. Davie Cooper was one of the finest Scottish players of his generation. The ground is visible from the M74 motorway approaching Junction 6, giving it an unexpectedly prominent position in the Lanarkshire landscape. Motherwell FC is fan-owned, having completed a community ownership transition in 2016, a distinction that creates a particularly strong bond between club and community at Fir Park.
Fir Park was opened in 1895 when Motherwell moved from Dalziel Park. Celtic provided the opposition for the inaugural match, winning 8-1 in front of over 6,000 spectators. The name Fir Park derives from the fir trees that lined the original approach to the ground. The land on which the stadium stands was originally owned by Lord Hamilton of Dalzell, whose racing colours of claret and amber were adopted by the club — hence Motherwell's distinctive strip. The stadium capacity reached 35,000 in the 1930s following significant expansion. The main stand was constructed in 1960 (renamed the Phil O'Donnell Stand in 2008), and the Davie Cooper Stand was added in 1995 during the centenary season, completing the current four-stand configuration. Motherwell reached the UEFA Cup under Bobby Robson-era European football and have been a consistent Scottish Premiership presence. The club completed a transition to full community ownership in 2016, unique among Scotland's top-flight clubs.
Fir Park generates a warm, community-rooted atmosphere on match days. The ground's compact size means supporters are close to the action, and the Motherwell faithful — the Well Society members and traditional fans alike — create a lively environment. The ground has a classic Scottish football feel, unpretentious and passionate. Matches against local rivals Hamilton Academical or big days against Celtic and Rangers generate the most intense atmospheres at Fir Park.
