Madison Square Garden — universally known as MSG or "The Garden" — is the home of the New York Rangers (NHL) and New York Knicks (NBA), located at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in Midtown Manhattan. The fourth building to carry the Madison Square Garden name, it opened on February 11, 1968 on the site of the demolished Pennsylvania Station (the original Penn Station, not the current facility), constructed on air rights acquired from the Pennsylvania Railroad. Designed by Charles Luckman Associates, the arena is the oldest active facility in the NBA and second-oldest in the NHL — and the last major arena in North American professional sport to operate without a corporate naming rights sponsor. The building's design is singular in world arenas: a circular structure with a cable-suspended roof and — uniquely — the world's only concave arena ceiling. This inward-curving ceiling enhances acoustics, creates the venue's iconic internal appearance, and has been preserved through two major renovations. The $1 billion Transformation renovation, completed in 2013 after 2.6 million man-hours of labour, touched every aspect of the arena: new seating bowl, state-of-the-art scoreboard, the Chase Bridge premium gondola suspended above centre ice, new concourses, and substantially upgraded premium hospitality. The renovation preserved MSG's historic character while modernising the fan experience for the 21st century. Penn Station — directly beneath the arena and serving NJ Transit, LIRR, Amtrak, and NYC subway — gives MSG the most transit-accessible location of any major arena in North America. Every corner of the New York metropolitan area is reachable by train. The surrounding Midtown Manhattan neighbourhood provides unparalleled pre-game dining, with Koreatown one block east, Times Square 10 minutes north, and world-class restaurants in every direction. The arena's event history is the richest of any venue in sports. Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier at "The Fight of the Century" here in 1971. Three WrestleMania events have been held at MSG, including the inaugural WrestleMania in 1985. Elton John performed 64 times; Phish has played 87 shows. Billy Joel's record-setting residency made MSG his home stage. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has appeared at every Madison Square Garden since 1877. The Rangers have won four Stanley Cup Championships with MSG as their home. Inside, concessions reflect New York's food culture: Paulie Gee's Brooklyn artisan pizza, David Chang's Fuku fried chicken, Carnegie Deli, Pat LaFrieda prime rib, Los Tacos No. 1, and Sloop Brewing craft beer. All purchases are cashless — reverse ATMs available throughout. MSG hosts 300+ events annually, was ranked the second-busiest music arena in the world by ticket sales, and continues to host Rangers games, Knicks games, college basketball, boxing, UFC, WWE, comedy, and the city's greatest cultural moments. There is no arena in professional sport more famous.
Madison Square Garden sits directly above Penn Station — the busiest rail station in North America. Multiple transit systems converge beneath the arena: NJ Transit trains from across New Jersey; Amtrak long-distance trains; the LIRR from Long Island; NYC Subway (1, 2, 3 trains at 34th Street–Penn Station; A, C, E trains at 34th Street–Penn Station; B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W trains at 34th Street–Herald Square one block east). From anywhere in the New York metropolitan area, Penn Station is reachable by train. No other arena in North America has this concentration of transit access.
Dozens of MTA bus routes serve 34th Street and 7th/8th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, surrounding Madison Square Garden. The M7, M11, M34, and M34A-SBS are among the most direct. Midtown bus service is frequent but slow due to traffic — the subway is faster for most journeys. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) in Midtown Manhattan is heavily congested on event nights; walk-out time to a rideshare can be significant. The MSG entrance on 7th Avenue and 31st–33rd Streets is the primary fan approach.
Madison Square Garden is on 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets in Midtown Manhattan — the most congested area of New York City. Parking garages are available on surrounding blocks but are extremely expensive ($40–$70+ per event). Traffic before and after Rangers games in Midtown is severe. Driving is strongly discouraged — Penn Station subway access makes transit the overwhelmingly superior option from anywhere in the metro area.
Madison Square Garden is in one of the most walkable locations of any arena in the world. Times Square is a 10-minute walk north; the Empire State Building is 3 blocks east; Chelsea Market and the High Line are 10 minutes south; Koreatown (32nd Street) is one block east; the Broadway theatre district is 10 minutes north. Hudson Yards is a 15-minute walk west. Dozens of hotels are within a 5-minute walk of the arena on 7th, 8th, and surrounding avenues.

The current MSG (the fourth building with that name) is on 7th and 8th Avenues between 31st and 33rd Streets — nowhere near Madison Square. The first two Madison Square Gardens (1879 and 1890) were located at Madison Square Park at Fifth Avenue and 26th Street and were named after President James Madison. The name persisted through the third Garden (1925, at 50th Street) and the current fourth Garden (1968, above Penn Station), maintaining continuity despite the change of address.
Madison Square Garden is the only major sports arena in North America that has never accepted corporate naming rights — retaining its original name since 1968. MSG Entertainment has consistently declined naming rights offers, preserving the "Madison Square Garden" brand as a self-sufficient cultural institution. In an era when virtually every arena carries a bank, insurance company, or tech firm's name, MSG's independence from corporate sponsorship is one of its most distinctive attributes.
Take any NYC subway line to 34th Street. The 1, 2, 3 trains stop at 34th Street–Penn Station directly beneath MSG. The A, C, E trains also stop at 34th Street–Penn Station. The B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W trains stop at 34th Street–Herald Square one block east. NJ Transit and LIRR trains from New Jersey and Long Island also arrive at Penn Station below the arena. Do not drive — Midtown Manhattan traffic is severe on event nights.
The Chase Bridge is a premium-seating gondola that hangs above centre ice at MSG, added during the 2013 Transformation renovation. It offers a unique mid-air perspective of Rangers and Knicks games. Note: from certain 200-level sideline seats in Row 15 or higher, the Chase Bridge may partially obstruct the view of the main centre-ice videoboard — aim for Row 14 or lower to avoid this.
All purchases inside Madison Square Garden are cashless — only debit and credit cards are accepted. Reverse ATMs are located throughout the venue to convert cash into a debit card for fans who arrive with cash only. No outside food or drink, including bottled water, may be brought into the arena.
The current MSG (Garden IV) features a distinctive circular design with a cable-suspended roof and — most unusually — the world's only concave arena ceiling. This inward-curving ceiling enhances acoustics and creates the arena's distinctive appearance from inside. After the 2013 Transformation, MSG also installed a new state-of-the-art scoreboard and the Chase Bridge gondola, while preserving the iconic ceiling that has defined the building since 1968.
MSG concessions feature New York-focused brands: Paulie Gee's Brooklyn artisan pizza, David Chang's Fuku fried chicken, Carnegie Deli classics, Pat LaFrieda prime rib sandwiches, Los Tacos No. 1, and Anita Gelato near the new entrance. Sloop Brewing Co. and other New York craft beer options are available at arena bars. All purchases are cashless.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show returned to Madison Square Garden in 2025 after a five-year absence — restoring one of the arena's most beloved traditions. The show has taken place at every version of Madison Square Garden since 1877, making it one of the longest-running relationships between an event and a venue in American sporting history. Westminster moved to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2021 due to COVID restrictions, returning to its spiritual home at MSG.
