McDiarmid Park is the home of St Johnstone Football Club, located in the Tulloch area on the western fringe of Perth, Perthshire. Opened on 19 August 1989 at a cost of £4.9 million, McDiarmid Park was among Scotland's first purpose-built all-seater football stadiums, and was regarded as a model modern ground at the time of its construction. Designed by Percy Johnson-Marshall and built by Miller Construction, the stadium has a capacity of 10,696 and features four separate stands: the North Stand, the East Stand (main stand), the South Stand, and the West Stand. St Johnstone FC — promoted to the Scottish Premiership as 2025-26 Championship champions, returning to the top flight immediately after relegation — brings Premiership football back to McDiarmid Park for 2026-27. The stadium has also hosted the Scottish Challenge Cup final on nine occasions, as well as international rugby including a full Scotland vs Japan international in 2004 and Scotland A fixtures. Stagecoach bus routes 1, 1A, 15, and 15A serve the stadium from Perth city centre.
St Johnstone moved to McDiarmid Park in 1989, having previously played at Muirton Park in Perth. The stadium was named after Bruce McDiarmid, the club chairman who drove the development. Before moving to Tulloch, St Johnstone's Muirton Park had been demolished to make way for a Safeway supermarket. McDiarmid Park opened on 19 August 1989, with Clydebank the first visitors. The stadium has proven a flexible venue beyond football — it hosted a Scotland vs Japan rugby international in 1996 and has been chosen as the final venue for the Scottish Challenge Cup nine times. St Johnstone won the League Cup in 2007-08 and achieved remarkable Scottish Cup victories in 2021 and League Cup success. The club was relegated at the end of 2024-25 but bounced straight back, winning the 2025-26 Scottish Championship under their management team.
McDiarmid Park generates a tight, focused atmosphere when St Johnstone are in form and playing before good home crowds. The compact stands are reasonably close to the pitch and the Saints support — smaller in number than the Old Firm but vocal and loyal — create a genuine home atmosphere. European nights at McDiarmid Park against continental opposition have produced some of the ground's most memorable occasions.
