Mullett Arena

The Arizona Coyotes played at Mullett Arena for two NHL seasons (2022--23 and 2023--24) after their lease at Gila River Arena in Glendale expired. With an NHL capacity of just 4,600, it was the smallest NHL venue in the modern era. A proposal for a new arena in Tempe was rejected by voters in May 2023. After the failed referendum, the NHL determined the Coyotes' situation was untenable and approved the sale and relocation of the franchise to Salt Lake City (Utah) on April 18, 2024. The Coyotes' final game at Mullett Arena was April 17, 2024 -- a 5--2 victory over Edmonton in front of tearful fans who watched players give away their jerseys at the final buzzer.

Mullett Arena is now primarily an ASU sports facility. Current tenants include ASU men's ice hockey (NCAA Division I), ASU women's ice hockey, ASU women's volleyball, and ASU men's wrestling. From the 2024--25 season, the NBA G League's Valley Suns (affiliate of the Phoenix Suns) play home games at Mullett Arena. The Mountain America Community Iceplex, adjacent to the main arena, is open for public skating and youth hockey.

Mullett Arena was built as a 5,000-seat college arena for ASU -- not designed for professional hockey. When the Coyotes needed a temporary home in 2022, the arena was modified with the Coyotes contributing approximately $20 million to upgrade it to NHL standards including a two-storey annex and professional locker room facilities. NHL capacity was capped at 4,600 -- officially the lowest permanent capacity of any NHL venue in the modern era. The intimate scale created a unique atmosphere: visiting players noted it was exciting in year one but impractical as a long-term NHL solution.

Take the Valley Metro Light Rail to the University Drive/Mill Avenue Station or Packard Drive Station -- both within walking distance of the arena. By car, access via I-10 (University Drive exit) or US-60. ASU campus parking is available at Packard Garage and other campus structures. The arena is at 411 South Packard Drive on the ASU Tempe campus.

One unopened water bottle is permitted per person -- a fan-friendly policy not found at most professional sports venues. Standard bag screening applies. Concessions inside the arena offer Coca-Cola products, beer, hot dogs, nachos, and standard college arena food at prices well below typical professional venue rates.

Former Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo was granted a five-year exclusive window to bring an NHL expansion team back to the Phoenix Valley. Maricopa County officials have expressed interest in pursuing a new franchise. As of 2025, Meruelo has also explored a new arena in Nevada. The NHL has indicated Arizona remains an attractive market. Any new Arizona franchise would need a new arena -- Mullett Arena's 5,000-seat capacity is too small for NHL operations.

Multiple ASU campus parking garages and surface lots serve Mullett Arena events. Packard Garage is the most convenient. For Valley Suns and ASU sports events, parking permits or paid event parking is available. Mill Avenue street parking is an option for fans who arrive early and want to explore Tempe's restaurant district.

The Mountain America Community Iceplex is a full-size ice rink on the west side of Mullett Arena, open to the public for skating sessions and used by youth hockey leagues and ASU women's hockey. The Iceplex was central to the Coyotes' temporary arrangement at ASU -- for the team's first four home games, it was used as the visiting team's locker room facility before the full annex was completed. Today it serves the wider Tempe community as a public skating and hockey development facility.

Yes. Mullett Arena is ADA compliant with wheelchair and companion seating, accessible restrooms, and elevator access. Valley Metro light rail with accessible stations serves the ASU campus. ASU's Disability Resources office (480-965-1234) can assist with accessibility needs. Note: the arena's concourses are notably narrow -- allow extra navigation time on busy event nights.

Mullett Arena is named after Donald and Barbara Mullett -- benefactors of Arizona State University who made a significant gift in support of the arena's construction. The facility was previously called the ASU Multi-Purpose Arena before being renamed in August 2022 ahead of its opening.
