Pittodrie Stadium is one of Scottish football's most historic venues, home to Aberdeen Football Club since the club's formation in 1903. Located near the Aberdeen beach front in the residential Pittodrie area, the stadium has a capacity of 20,866 and is the fourth-largest in Scotland. Four stands surround the pitch: the North Stand (Main Stand, dating to 1925 and housing all day-to-day facilities and executive boxes), the Richard Donald Stand (RDS, opened 1993, capacity 6,000, named after former chairman Dick Donald), the South Stand, and the Merkland Road End (family stand). Pittodrie holds two pioneering distinctions in British football history: it was the first stadium in the United Kingdom to feature dugouts — invented by Aberdeen player-coach Donald Colman in the 1920s — and was among the first all-seated, all-covered stadiums in the UK. Aberdeen FC won the Scottish Cup in 2024-25 for the first time in 35 years, their greatest triumph since Sir Alex Ferguson's era. Plans for a new beachfront stadium approximately 300 metres from Pittodrie have been under discussion since December 2025, when Aberdeen FC and Aberdeen City Council met to discuss a community stadium development.
Pittodrie Stadium has been Aberdeen FC's home since the club played its first match here in August 1903, a 1-1 draw with Stenhousemuir watched by around 8,000 supporters. The site had previously been used as a dung hill for police horses before being developed as a football ground. The North Stand (Main Stand) was constructed in 1925, surviving a significant fire in 1970. Donald Colman's invention of the dugout at Pittodrie in the 1920s was a revolutionary contribution to football — the concept spread worldwide and is now universal. The stadium record attendance of 45,061 was set for a Scottish Cup tie against Hearts on 13 March 1954. The Taylor Report transformed Pittodrie into an all-seater ground in the early 1990s, with the Richard Donald Stand completing the modernisation in 1993. Aberdeen have never been relegated from the top division of Scottish football since their election to it in 1905, a remarkable record. The Ferguson era of the 1980s — when Aberdeen won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983, defeating Real Madrid — represents the club's greatest heights.
Pittodrie generates a passionate atmosphere, particularly for fixtures against rivals Rangers and Glasgow clubs. The ground's enclosed design, with stands on all four sides, channels noise well. The Red Army supporters in the South Stand are the most vocal section. The stadium's seaside location in the granite city of Aberdeen gives it a unique character — the smell of the North Sea is occasionally detectable on windy days. Aberdeen fans are known for their fierce loyalty to their club and city, and the atmosphere on big occasion nights at Pittodrie is electric.
Aberdeen FC offer guided behind-the-scenes stadium tours of Pittodrie. Tours cover the home and away dressing rooms, the dugouts where Donald Colman invented the concept, the press suite, and the Richard Donald Stand banqueting rooms. The Aberdeen FC museum within the stadium charts the club's history including the 1983 European triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson. Book via afc.co.uk.
