26 March 2025
Cricket Australia has secured The Gabba's cricket future through to 2032, confirming the venue will host annual Test matches from 2027-28 to 2031-32 as part of the Brisbane Olympics lead-up program, ensuring cricket's spiritual home in Queensland remains active until the Victoria Park transition. The announcement includes confirmation that the new Victoria Park stadium will host the first Test of the 2033-34 Ashes series as one of its inaugural major sporting events, marking a historic transition for Australian cricket. The Gabba's reputation as a fortress for Australian cricket teams, built on its famous fast and bouncy pitch characteristics, will continue through this final chapter of international cricket hosting. With its heritage including the legendary 1960 tied Test between Australia and the West Indies and countless Ashes battles, The Gabba will conclude its cricket hosting duties with a fitting farewell program leading to the 2032 Olympics. The venue's unique pitch conditions and intimidating atmosphere have created numerous memorable moments in cricket history, making these final Test matches particularly significant for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
20 March 2025
In March 2025, following extensive reviews and a change of government, Queensland confirmed plans for a revolutionary new $3.8 billion stadium at Victoria Park to serve as the centerpiece of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The new 63,000-seat venue will replace The Gabba as Brisbane's primary cricket and AFL stadium, marking the end of an era for the historic venue that has served Brisbane sport since 1895. The Gabba will continue operations until 2032, hosting Brisbane Lions AFL matches and international cricket including annual Test matches from 2027-28 to 2031-32 as part of the Olympic lead-up program. Following the Olympics, The Gabba will be demolished to make way for residential development, while the new Victoria Park stadium inherits all current tenants including the Brisbane Lions, Queensland Bulls, and Brisbane Heat. Premier David Crisafulli noted that 'The Gabba is at its end of life' and emphasized the opportunity for legacy infrastructure that will serve Brisbane for generations beyond the Olympic Games.
15 September 2024
The Brisbane Lions experienced unprecedented fan support during the 2024 AFL season, selling out nine of their twelve home matches at The Gabba, highlighting both the team's on-field success and the venue's intimate atmosphere that creates an incredible home ground advantage. With current capacity limited to 37,000 for AFL matches, demand has consistently exceeded availability, leading to Lions officials projecting membership numbers will top 70,000 for the 2025 season. The sellout success demonstrates how the Lions have 'outgrown' The Gabba's current capacity, supporting the case for the larger Victoria Park stadium development. The passionate Lions fanbase has created one of the AFL's most intimidating home venues, with The Gabba's unique atmosphere and acoustic properties amplifying crowd noise to levels that rival much larger stadiums. This fan support has been instrumental in the Lions' recent competitive success and reinforces The Gabba's reputation as a fortress for Queensland AFL football until the transition to Victoria Park.
